The ISOF presents:The Throat Punch Industries Submission Only Grappling Tournament 3/30/13

So today we (10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Gulf Shores), along with Outlaw MMA, & Throat Punch Industries put on our first ever submission only grappling tournament. We had a pretty decent turn out, a lot of tough competitors from schools on the Gulf Coast & upper Alabama. One family actually drove 4 hours for their girls to compete!

Brandan Catlin with his 2 silver medals.
We had a lot of great kids compete, 2 of which got at least 2 medals a piece. The 2 medal winners were Patrick Hall and our very own Brandan Catlin. He almost went for a Twister on a kid! Luckily he had someone to tell him that was illegal in the kids division. Ha!

There were only 4 women to compete. That makes it tough. 2 were closer to heavyweight and the other 2 in the 120 Ib range. Our girls took home a gold and a silver (1st & 2nd place) medal. I learned today that being the small girl you really have to have skills, skills to survive and then spot on technique to win. I was VERY proud of my rolling partner today. Dyana showed a lot of heart and patience in her match, even though she was having a time with it! It was a hard match up. On top of that somehow her nose busted. I'm not sure if it was from her opponent's crossfacing skills or anxiety, but despite the fact that that happened & we had to get her all cleaned up, she kept on after that. That's a fight.

A lot of our guys competed: Chase (Red) Gatlin, Chase Kendrick, Chase Hannah, Sergio Perez, Jeremy Combast, Trey Rushing, Donny Thompson, Scott Thomas, and Mike Morgan.

Everyone did well, especially considering the fact that we were at the gym until 11p.m. last night with some of our guys sweating out the last few pounds they needed to cut. It will almost break you to sweat, work that hard, and dehydrate yourself like that, but they did what they had to.

Sergio Perez, placed 1st in the men's 145 division seen here with his Gold medal.

Altogether we ended up with 6 Golds, 7 Silvers, multiple absolute medals, and also the team title! Go team! Not to mention how great the learning will be when we get back on the grind Monday. Sean always tells us when we're getting ready to compete that win or lose, you win because you learn either way. So we're ready to start working hard for the next tournament we're putting on. I believe it will be on May 25th at the same place, the Conference Center at the Wharf in Orange Beach, Alabama.
